What is Undertone?

The Undertone app is a private therapy companion that helps you capture sessions, remember what mattered, and see patterns, progress, and themes over time through session recaps, daily reflection activities, and monthly summaries.

Is this a replacement for therapy?

No. Undertone is designed to support therapy, not replace your therapist or treatment plan.

Is this app actually safe?

Yes. Undertone exists because, as founders, we wanted this for our own therapy sessions. But therapy data is not ordinary app data. We did not want our most personal conversations sitting inside a generic AI tool, and there really wasn't a product that treated therapy with the care it deserves, or that could do what we wanted.

So we built the version we actually trust and use, ourselves.

Undertone runs on the same secure infrastructure we already use at Mosaic for therapists and clinics across North America. It is built to comply with HIPAA and PIPEDA, and your personal content is never used to train AI models.

What happens to the recording?

Audio is never stored. It's used only to create your session insights, then it is promptly deleted.

Can I choose what gets shared?

Yes. Your content stays private unless you choose to share parts of it.

Do you keep transcripts, or train your AI with my content?

Accepted Answer

No. Your audio and transcript are used only to create your private session recap, themes, Moments, and related outputs. After processing, they are deleted. We absolutely never use your personal content to train AI models.

Is this just ChatGPT?

No. Undertone uses AI, but it's built specifically for therapy. It's designed around the things that actually matter in that context — privacy, continuity between sessions, and helping you hold onto what came up in a way that stays organized, useful, and easy to come back to later.

Why can't I just use ChatGPT?

You can, but general AI tools aren't built specifically for therapy. The reality is that people using tools like ChatGPT are not using HIPAA-regulated platforms, and entering personal health information into general-purpose AI tools means that information is not handled with the level of privacy you'd want for therapy.

Why not just journal after therapy?

Journaling can be really helpful. Undertone is for people who want something a little more structured — a way to capture key themes, takeaways, homework, and next steps without having to remember everything or start from scratch every time.

Why not just use my Notes app?

Accepted Answer

Your Notes app can store information, but it won't really help you do much with it after that. Undertone goes a step further by organizing your sessions, surfacing recurring themes, and helping you notice what's actually changing over time.

Do I need my therapist's consent?

Accepted Answer

We strongly encourage asking for your therapist's consent before recording a session and checking your local recording consent laws, as requirements may vary by jurisdiction. If your therapist would rather not be recorded, that's completely okay — Undertone is designed to still produce a helpful output using the voice recap feature right after your session.

How does it work?

Just bring your phone to session, tap Capture, and let Undertone do its thing in the background. A few minutes after your session ends, you'll get a private note, recap, and additional insights into the session. If you're not recording, you can use the voice recap feature instead, and Undertone will still help you capture what mattered, notice patterns, and track progress over time.

Can I use it for telehealth and in-person?

Yes. Undertone is designed for both telehealth and in-person sessions. You can record the session, upload audio, or use a post-session voice recap to tell Undertone what happened right after. Either way, you'll still get a high-quality private summary.

What do I get after a session?

Accepted Answer

You'll get a private session note and recap with key themes, important moments, takeaways, any homework or next steps discussed in session, and a clear record you can come back to before your next session to pick up where you left off. You can also look through your past sessions anytime if you want to revisit something specific.

What kind of metrics does it track?

The Undertone app can surface recurring themes, reflection (mood and wellness) trends, streaks, and changes over time, so you can better understand what's shifting across sessions and throughout the month. It also highlights progress signals that can help you and your therapist get a clearer sense of how therapy is going over time.

Undertone can highlight takeaways, reminders, and things to carry forward between sessions, but it does not replace guidance from your therapist.
